This Day In History

1857 Hugo Schauinsland (1857 - 1937) was born on this day. He was a German zoologist, professor at the university of Munich(1885). Founding director of the Städtischen Sammlungen für Naturgeschichte und Ethnographie (1887), later known as the Übersee-Museum Bremen, serving as director of the museum until his retirement in 1933. In 1896-97 he conducted scientific research in the Pacific documenting his stay on Laysan in the book, Three months on a coralline island (1899). Amongst other species the Hawaiian monk seal and the Redspotted sandperch are named in his honour.
Schauinsland is honoured in the names of around 38 species under schauinslandi(i).
