Gunnar Thorson was born on this day. A Danish marine biologist who studied the planktonic larvae of marine benthic invertebrates he was professor of marine biology at the University of Copenhagen. He founded a Marine Biological Laboratory on the Island of Hven, now based at Helsingør under the University of Copenhagen.
He is honoured in the names of around 18 taxa and in the name of the Danish environmental protection vessel, HDMS Gunnar Thorson.
