The second voyage of HMS Beagle departed Plymouth Sound on this day. This voyage, lasting from 1831 to 1836 is the most famous of the Beagle’s 3 scientific expeditions, immortalized in the journals of Charles Darwin published as The Voyage of the Beagle.
Commemorated in the genus Beaglichthys, albeit at second-hand as the species in question was named for its location, Beagle Gulf, in turn named after the ship. The name ‘Beagle’ occurs in the names of 10 further taxa.
