This Day in History: 1643-12-25
Christmas Island Captain William Mynors of the East India Company vessel, the Royal Mary, sights and names the island on Christmas Day. The first recorded landing doesn’t occur until 1688 by the crew of the Cygnet under the command of English navigator William Dampier.
This island is the site of one of the planet’s greatest animal migrations with millions of the endemic Christmas Island Red Crabs Gecarcoidea natalis making a yearly round trip from the forested inland areas, where they otherwise live throughout the year, to the sea in order to breed.
Gecarcoidea – Greek, Ge-, gh, earth, land; -carc-, karkinos, crab; -oidea, oides, similar to, resembling.
natalis – Latin, of or belonging to birth, birthday.
