HIM Emperor Akihito of Japan was born on this day. Following his father’s interest in marine biology (Emperor Hirohito, who established the Biological Laboratory of the Imperial Household in 1925) he is a published ichthyologist specialising in the family Gobiidae, describing 8 new species of gobies and having a further 6 species of gobies named in his honour including one genus.
