Pierre-Joseph van Beneden was born on this day. A Belgian zoologist, he established what was possibly the world’s first marine research station at Ostend in 1843, incorporating a marine laboratory and aquarium. His areas of study included marine invertebrates, cetaceans (both living and extinct), and parasitology, publishing more than two hundred papers over the course of his career.
