Helen Battle (1903 – 1994) was born on this day. She was a Canadian ichthyologist and teacher. Battle was the first woman in Canada to earn a PhD in Marine Biology. She was associated with the University of Western Ontario throughout her career (1929 – 1967). In addition to being a highly regarded teacher she carried out research, mostly regarding fish embryology, publishing 37 papers or articles between 1926 and 1973 on a diverse range of species including skate, mussels, hake, goldfish, Atlantic salmon, and lampreys. Battle was selected as one of 19 outstanding women scientists by the national Museum of Natural Science in 1975, International Women’s Year.
