Émil Goeldi (1859 – 1917) was born on this day. He was a Swiss zoologist who studied under Haeckel. Goeldi was invited to head the zoology section of the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1884 – 90). Director of Pará Museum of Natural History and Ethnography (1894 – 1905) which was later renamed in his honour, Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (1902).
Goeldi was interested in a wide range of Brazilian fauna, particularly that of Amazonia, he described a single species of catfish and is honoured in the name of the catfish genus Goeldiella, and in the names of a number of species under goeldii.
