This Day in History: 1910-08-17

Georg Scheer (1910 – 2004) was born on this day. He was a German coral specialist, initially an electrical engineer who worked with von Braun developing rockets during WW2. Scheer took part in two of the Hans Hass Xarifa expeditions during the early 1950s. He published on the corals of the Maldives, Nicobar Islands, and the Red Sea with coauthor C.S. Gopinadha Pillai. Based at the Hessian State Museum from which he retired as vice director in 1975.

Scheer described around 21 taxa of stony corals (mostly along with Pillai) and is honoured in the name of Merulina scheeri Head, 1983.
