Wilhelm Gottlieb Tilesius (1769 – 1857) was born on this day. Also known as Wilhelm Gottlieb Tilesius von Tilenau, he was a German naturalist and explorer, who
participated as ship’s doctor, marine biologist, and expedition artist on the frigate Nadezhda in the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe (1803 – 06), publishing the natural history of the voyage as Fruits of the natural history of the first Russian circumnavigation of the Earth (1813), and his illustrated report on the expedition in 1814.
Tilesius described around 100 new taxa and is honoured in the name of a genus of fishes, Tilesina, and in the names of a number of species under tilesi(i).
