James Scott Bowerbank (1797 – 1877) was born on this day. He was a British naturalist and palaeontologist, much interested in microscopy. Founding member of the Ray Society, the Royal Microscopical Society, and of the Zoological Society. Bowerbank is best known for his 4 vol. A Monograph of the British Spongidae (1864 – 82).
Bowerbank described numerous taxa and is honoured in the names of a number of species under bowerbanki(i).
