Masamitsu Ōshima (1884 – 1965) was born on this day. He was a Japanese ichthyologist and herpetologist. Studied under Jordan at Stanford University (1919). Noted for his studies of the fish species of Taiwan, publications include Contributions to the study of the fresh water fishes of the island of Formosa, and Notes on Freshwater Fishes of Formosa, with Descriptions of New Genera and Species. Oshima ascertained the existence of the rare Formosan landlocked salmon (1919). Manager of the Misaki Marine Biological Station (1927 – 30).
