This Day in History: 1926-06-16

Gerlof Mees (1926 – 2013) was born on this day.
He was a Dutch ichthyologist and ornithologist, Curator of Vertebrates at the Western Australian Museum from 1958 to 1963. Mees was the first to describe Lepidogalaxias salamandroides Mees, 1961, the Salamander fish, an unusual Australian freshwater species with the ability to survive dry seasons by burrowing into the sand and the rare (in a fish) capacity to articulate their neck.

Mees appears to have described around 20 taxa and is honoured in the names of a number of species under meesi.
