This Day in History: 1820-05-11

HMS Beagle was launched on this day.
Famous for its association with Charles Darwin. One of more than a 100 Cherokee-class ships built, a brig-sloop capable of mounting 10 guns, it was converted into a three-masted barque in 1825 as an exploration and survey vessel before its first voyage. She would go on to make three survey voyages 1826-1830, 1831-1836 (Darwin’s voyage), and 1837-1843.

Commemorated in the genus Beaglichthys, albeit at second-hand as the species in question was named for its location, Beagle Gulf, in turn named after the ship. The name ‘Beagle’ occurs in the names of 10 further taxa.
