D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson (1860 – 1948) was born on this day. He was a Scottish zoologist, mathematician and classics scholar; Professor of Natural History at St Andrews, 1917-48. Best known for his book, On Growth and Form (1917), an investigation into the role of mathematics in biology; other publications include a translation of Aristotle’s Historia Animalium (1910), and A glossary of Greek fishes (1945).
Thompson is honoured in the names of a family and genus of copepods and in the species name darcythompsoni.
