Franz Leydig (1821 – 1908) died on this day.
He was a German zoologist and comparative anatomist, professor of Zoology and Comparative anatomy at the University of Tübingen, later of the University of Bonn where he was also director of the zoological museum and the zoological institute. In addition to his work in comparative anatomy Leydig published on parasitic and free-living copepods and on other crustaceans.

Leydig described 17 taxa and is honoured in the names of 15 taxa and in the names of 11 species under leydigi(i).
