Joseph S. Nelson (1937 – 2011) was born on this day.
He was a US ichthyologist, professor at the University of Alberta. He is best known for his book, Fishes of the World a standard reference for fish systematics, first published in 1976 and due to go into its fifth edition in April 2016.

Nelson described around 20 species of fish and is honoured in the names of a number of species under nelsoni.
