This Day in History: 1914-04-10

Earl Stannard Herald (1914 – 1973) was born on this day. He was a US ichthyologist, curator, later Associate Director of Steinhart Aquarium of the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco. Died in a diving accident off Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, whilst searching for specimens of Holacanthus clarionensis. Herald studied at Stanford under Myers. Of his 93 publications 14 concerned the syngnathidae which he had a particular interest in, describing around 20 taxa in the family.

Herald is honoured in the name of the syngnathid genus Heraldia and in the names of a number of species under heraldi(i).
