This Day In History: 1777-04-08

Antoine Risso (1777 – 1845) was born on this day.
He was a Niçard (citizen of Nice, now part of France) naturalist, known for studying the natural history of the Mediterranean. Risso is best known for his works on Mediterranean fishes but also published on crustaceans, molluscs, and cephalopods.

Risso is honoured in the names of a tremendous number of taxa including two superfamilies and three families of gastropods, a family of red algae, and in the names of species under risso, rissoi, and rissoanus.
