Philip Henry Gosse (1810 – 1888) was born on this day. He was an English naturalist and a prolific writer of popular natural history works. Gosse can be considered the father of the marine aquarium, he coined the term, ‘aquarium’ in the title of his book, The Aquarium: an unveiling of the wonders of the deep sea (1854), and became the first marine aquarium writer with the publication of, A Handbook to the Marine Aquarium (1855).
Gosse described around 220 taxa and is honoured in the names of numerous taxa and in the names of a number of species under gossei.
