Rolf Ling Bolin (1901 – 1973) was born on this day.
He was a US ichthyologist. A faculty member at Stanford and Assistant, later Associate, Director of Hopkins Marine Station, and program director for the Te Vega, a 100 foot long schooner, which was converted into a floating laboratory and classroom to allow students direct experience of biological oceanography. Bolin was a friend of Ricketts and Steinbeck, he identified some of the creatures from their Sea of Cortez trip.

Bolin described around 30 taxa and is honoured in the names of two genera of fishes and in the names of a number of species under bolini.
