This Day in History: 1794-03-20

René Primevère Lesson (1794 – 1849) was born on this day.
He was a French zoologist and naval physician and served as pharmacist and naturalist on Duperrey’s round-the-world voyage of La Coquille between 1822 and1825. Lesson spent seven years preparing the vertebrate zoological section of the official account of the expedition, Voyage autour du monde sur La Coquille (1826 – 39)

Lesson described more than 500 taxa and is honoured in the names of around 100 taxa including species under lessonii.
