This Day in History: 1768-03-19

Edward Donovan (1768 – 1837) was born on this day.
He was an Anglo-Irish natural history collector, illustrator, and writer. Donovan was the author and illustrator of a number of natural history titles, including The Natural History of British Shells (1800 – 04) and The Natural History of British Fishes (1802 – 08). He founded the London Museum and Institute of Natural History (1807 to 1817), a collection focusing on specimens found in Great Britain arranged according to the Linnaean system and containing ‘nearly thirty thousand individual articles’.

Donovan is honoured in the names of a couple of taxa, Donovaniella and donovani, neither of which are currently valid.
