This Day in History: 1887-03-16

S. Stillman Berry (1887 – 1984) was born on this day.
He was a US malacologist interested in cephalopods, chitons and land snails; the published version of his doctoral dissertation, Cephalopoda, is still considered the definitive study of Pacific cephalopods. Although he was only a professional academic for five years, as a librarian and research assistant at the Scripps Institution for Biological Research, he went on to become a renowned malacologist, describing 401 mollusc taxa and publishing 209 articles.

Berry is honoured in the name of a squid genus, Berryteuthis, and in the names of a number species under
berryi and stillmani.
