This Day in History: 1876-03-14

Lev Berg (1876 – 1950) was born on this day. He was a Russian geographer and ichthyologist. Berg’s scholarly output was immense, his work spanned evolutionary theory, ichthyology, general zoology and biology, palaeontology, zoogeography, geography, geology, and ethnography. He published over 200 works on ichthyology including the four volume Fishes of Russia (1916), Fresh-water fishes of Russia (1923), and Freshwater Fishes of the Soviet Union and Adjacent Countries (1949).

Berg described numerous taxa and is honoured in the names of a number of species under bergi and bergii.
