This Day in History: 1854-03-12

E. W. Scripps (1854 – 1926) died on this day. He was a US newspaper publisher and in 1903, along with his sister Ellen, was a founding donor towards what we today know as the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Although initially doubtful about the venture he developed a deep friendship with the scientific director, William Emerson Ritter, and became an enthusiastic supporter.

The Scripps name is honoured in the names of 67 taxa although it is unclear which Scripps is being honoured directly rather than a second hand through the name of the institute, the medusa genus Scrippsia and the species name scrippsiana appear to be directly honouring either brother or sister (or both).
