This Day in History: 1902-02-27
John Steinbeck (1902 – 1968) was born on this day. He was a US novelist, author of 16 novels, many of them set in California or during the Great Depression. Steinbeck has a peripheral connection to the aquatic sciences through his friendship with marine biologist Ed Ricketts, the model for ‘Doc’ in Cannery Row (1945).
Steinbeck’s non-fiction work, Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research (1941), later republished as The Log from the Sea of Cortez, details a six-week long expedition collecting marine specimens in the Gulf of California with Ricketts.
Steinbeck is honoured in the names of a number of species under steinbecki.
