This Day in History: 1718-02-26

Johan Ernst Gunnerus (1718 – 1773) was born on this day. He was a Norwegian bishop and naturalist. A founding member of the Trondheim Society, later to become the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. Gunnerus was a correspondent of Linnaeus, publishing a description of the basking shark in 1765 naming it Squalus maximus (now Cetorhinus maximus).

He is honoured in the names of a number of aquatic species under gunneri.
