This Day in History: 1800-02-23

William Jardine (1841 – 1919) was born on this day. A Scottish naturalist, he was notable for editing and publishing a series of natural history books, The Naturalist’s Library. The widely available series of books extended to 40 volumes, including six on ichthyology, and made natural history accessible to a wider audience than had been previously possible.

Although described as an ichthyologist Jardine was more active as an ornithologist including naming three species of aquatic birds, he does not seem to be honoured in the names of any aquatic species (the jardinii and jardinei of Saville-Kent are named for Australian pioneer, Frank Jardine).
