Charles Darwin was born on this day. He was an English naturalist and geologist primarily remembered for his contributions to evolutionary theory (On the Origin of Species). His influence on the aquatic sciences includes the natural history documented in the Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle (1838-43), his study on the formation of coral atolls, Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs (1842), and his two monographs on barnacles.
Darwin is honoured in around 240 aquatic taxa including
a suborder, a superfamily, 2 families, 5 genera and numerous species under names such as darwini, darwinii, darwiniana, and darwiniensis.
