Karl August Möbius was born on this day. He was a German zoologist and a pioneer in the field of ecology.
Möbius opened the first German marine aquarium in Hamburg in 1863. He was Professor of Zoology at the University of Kiel and the director of the Zoological Museum, later director of the Zoological Collections of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, and Professor of Systematic and Geographical Zoology at the Kaiser Wilhelm University, Berlin.
He described 58 taxa and is honoured in the species name moebiusii.
