William Henry Harvey was born on this day. He was an Irish botanist specializing in algae; Professor of Botany of the Royal Dublin Society and curator of the Trinity College Herbarium. Harvey was the leading phycologist of his era, author of publications including Phycologia Britannica (1846 – 51), Nereis Boreali-Americana. (1852 – 85), and Phycologia Australica (1858 – 63).

He described over 75 genera and around 750 species of algae and is honoured in the name of the genus Harveyella and in numerous species under harveyi or harveyana.
