This Day in History: 1874-02-02

William T. Innes was born on this day. He was a US aquarist and author; founder, publisher and editor of The Aquarium the the first national US tropical freshwater fishkeeping magazine (1932 – 1967). Innes is probably best known for his influential book, Exotic Aquarium Fishes (1935), which ran through 19 editions informing several generations of aquarists and earning it the soubriquet, “the aquarist’s bible”.

He is honoured in the name of Paracheirodon innesi the Neon tetra and in the name of a tropical water lily cultivar, Nymphaea ‘William T. Innes’.
