Johann Jakob Heckel was born on this day. He was an Austrian ichthyologist and director of the Fish Collection at the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna.
Heckel described 122 taxa, mostly freshwater, including around 30 new genera with names familiar to aquarists such as Geophagus, Pterophyllum, Symphysodon, and Xiphophorus.

He is honoured in 17 species of fish under heckeli or heckelii.
