This Day in History: 1854-01-16

Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré died this day. He was a French botanist who served on three major voyages of exploration: the circumglobal expedition of the ships L’Uranie and La Physicienne (1817 – 1820), on L’Herminie to South America (1831), and the global circumnavigation on La Bonite (1836 – 1837).

He is honoured in 47 aquatic taxa, two genera Gaudichaudia and Gaudichaudius, along with 45 species as gaudichaudi or gaudichaudii, a surprising number for a botanist.
