This Day in History: 1895-01-10

William Charles Schroeder was born on this day. A US ichthyologist, he devoted his career to the study of the fishes of the western North Atlantic. With his colleague and friend Henry Bryant Bigelow, at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, he described one new family, seven genera, and 42 new species.

He is honoured in the name of a genus of cat sharks, Schroedericthys, and 8 further species as schroederi.
